She completed her 4 years of registrar training at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital, during which she completed her Diploma in Anaesthesia through the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa, and passed her Fellowship examination with the College of Anaesthetists of South Africa.

She completed her Master of Medicine (Anaesthesiology) degree through Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. The title of her MMed Dissertation was “A Randomised Control Trial to Compare Quality of Recovery between Desflurane and Isoflurane Inhalational Anaesthesia in Patients Receiving General Anaesthesia for Ophthalmological Surgery at a Tertiary Hospital (DIQoR trial)”. This research project sparked an interest in patient-reported perioperative outcomes, and she hopes to do further research in this developing field.

Clinically, Dr Steyl enjoys doing anaesthesia for all types of surgery and patients of all ages, but she has a special interest in anaesthesia for Hepato-Pancreatico-Billiary cases and in regional anaesthesia.

Dr Steyl enjoys teaching, and still holds a sessional post at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital where she is involved in anaesthesia for Hepato-Pancreatico-Billiary cases and in the teaching of anaesthesiology registrars. She is also an instructor on Advanced Trauma Life Support Courses and enjoys doing presentations at anaesthesiology conferences.

For Dr Steyl to follow up with her patients, she encourages them to make use of the Perioperative Shared Health Record, an online platform where patients can complete a detailed pre-operative questionnaire, and where they can complete standardised post-operative questionnaires designed to evaluate the quality of recovery and quality of life after surgery.
